Cluster magnetic field observations of the bowshock: Orientation, motion and structure
نویسندگان
چکیده
Four spacecraft Cluster magnetic field observations of the low β quasi-perpendicular terrestrial bowshock are presented for the first time. Multiple quasi-perpendicular crossings on 25 December 2000 are analysed. By combining data from the four spacecraft, bowshock orientations and velocities can be calculated. It is shown that, even while in rapid motion, the bowshock normal direction remains remarkably constant, and that coplanarity estimates are accurate to, typically, around 20. Magnetic field magnitude profiles are shown to be very well correlated between spacecraft although downstream waves with fluctuations perpendicular to the local field, while statistically similar at all four spacecraft, are poorly correlated on separation scales of several hundred km. Examples are shown of a number of bowshock phenomena, including non-standing fluctuations in the shock foot and the shock interacting with changing solar wind conditions.

A study of magnetic drift motion of particles around the equatorial plasmapause by using the cluster observation
On August 7, 2003 the Cluster spacecraft moved through the dayside magnetosphere. The energetic particle spectrometer on board Cluster provided measurements of an extensive range of energy. Besides, satellite measurements of geomagnetic field showed a gradient magnetic field. It is known that an inhomogeneity of the magnetic field leads to a drift of charged particles. In this paper, the drift ...
متن کاملINVESTIGATION ON THE EFFECTS OF MAGNETIC FIELD ON BROMIDE-INDUCED PITTING OF COMMERCIALLY PURE TITANIUM
Abstract: In chloride salt solutions, titanium alloys exhibit reasonably high pitting potentials as high as +10 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) at room temperatures. On the other hand, anodic pitting potentials are significantly lower in bromide solutions. In this study, pitting corrosion of commercially pure titanium in aqueous NaBr solution of 0.1 M concentration at room temperature was studied and the e...
متن کاملLongitudinal Magnetic Field Effect on Torsional Vibration of Carbon Nanotubes
Torsional dynamic analysis of carbon nanotubes under the effect of longitudinal magnetic field is carried out in the present study. Torque effect of an axial magnetic field on a carbon nanotube has been defined using Maxwell’s relation. Nonlocal governing equation and boundary conditions for carbon nanotubes are obtained by using Hamilton’s minimum energy principle. Eringen’s nonlocal stress gr...

We present new 2.2 µm diffraction-limited images from the W. M. Keck 10 m and Gemini 8 m telescopes of the cool Galactic Center sources, IRS 1W, 5, 8, 10W, and 21 along with new proper motions for IRS 1W, 10W and 21. These observations were carried out to test the bowshock hypothesis presented by Tanner et al. as an alternative to a very recent (10 4 yr) epoch of star formation within the tidal...
متن کاملCooling Enhancement of a Photovoltaic Panel Through Ferrofluid Stimulation Using a Magnetic-Wind Turbine
Wind energy is used to rotate a magnetic turbine in order to remove heat from the surface of a photovoltaic (PV) panel. A three-bladed turbine, which rotates with wind energy, has rotational motion underneath the studied PV panel in order to move Magnetic Nano-Particles (MNPs). In addition, effects of the magnetic field strength (B=450-830 mT), rotational velocity of the magnetic turbine (ω), a...
